The Staves - If I Was
Folk sister act return with lush sophomore offering
Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley-Taylor return with If I Was, the follow-up to their 2012 debut, Dead & Born & Grown. Producer Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) helps weave a captivating spell here; the sisters’ magical harmonies mingle with lush soundscapes (‘Blood I Bled’), delicate, hardly-there production (‘Damn It All’), and even the odd gentle country twang (‘Don’t You Call Me Anymore’).
At 12 tracks, it may feel a little long, especially since the true thrill of The Staves’ sound lies in their goosebump-inducing live performances. Be sure to catch them if you can, as they’re hitting the road shortly to give this lovely collection a live airing.
Key Track - 'No Me, No You, No More'
