The Smiths' drummer Mike Joyce announces memoir
The memoir will "re-contextualise fan favourite moments through a beautifully vulnerable, human insight into his life"
Mike Joyce, former drummer of The Smiths, has announced his "no holds-barred" memoir The Drums, detailing his time in the Manchester group.
The Drums is set for a UK release on November 6, by New Modern publishing house.
“The written history of the Smiths is not missing an encyclopaedic account of everything that happened over the years; but Mike’s honest, entertaining and deeply human memoir is what Smiths fans have been waiting for. This book truly conveys what it felt like to be a member of the Smiths," reads the description.
The drummer will be the last member of the band to release a memoir alongside Morrissey with his book, Autobiography, in 2013 and guitarist Johnny Marr's Set the Boy Free in 2016.
Joyce joined the band in 1982, after their original drummer Simon Wolstencroft, who played on the recording of their first demos. Joyce would then serve as the bands drummer throughout its existence.
The Smiths have not reunited since their split in 1987. Marr said in 2025, that he turned down the deal due to the "vibe" not being right and also implied Morrissey's political views were a factor, despite being offered a lucrative AEG deal.
Joyce told NME in 2024, that without his former bandmate Andy Rourke being there, it would be "impossible" to have a reunion with The Smiths.
The Drums written by Mike Joyce, is available to pre order here.
