The Logic of Chance

It’s nearly two years since producer/DJ Dan Le Sac joined forces with beardy spoken word artist-turned-rapper Scroobius Pip. The result was Angles, a quirky collection of social and cultural commentaries set against an eclectic backdrop of hip-hop and dance beats.
Now the Londoners are back with The Logic of Chance. And while this second offering showcases more of the same in terms of Pip’s musings on social issues (hello domestic violence, knife crime and teen pregnancies), Le Sac’s production is more experimental, seeing him dipping his mitts into the realms of electro and drum ‘n bass.
The result is an impressive piece of work from a duo whose collaboratory union has clearly grown tighter over the last two years. Though tracks might not initially seem to have the “wow” factor of ‘The Beat That My Heart Skipped’, or ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’, given a few listens, The Logic of Chance is a serious grower. From drum ‘n bass heavy opener ‘Sick Tonight,’ to feel-good current single ‘Get Better’, Pip’s urban poetry is as vivid and effective as ever. For example, on the latter he effortlessly sums up teenage lust: “Tops crop, skirts stop/ At the top of their thighs/ And the boys got that hungry look in their eyes.”
Such insightful and witty lyrical content, teamed with Le Sac’s fresh new array of dance beats (make sure to check out the brilliant ‘Cauliflower’), ensures that The Logic of Chance never gets boring. In fact, after a few listens, you’ll find it hard to get it out of your head.
