The Chalets speak about breakup

Eyes moistened and lips trembled in HP Central last week when word came through that Dublin’s perfect popsters The Chalets have decided to call it a day.
“We were five friends when we started, and we’re still five friends now which is pretty remarkable given how much we lived in each other’s pockets,” drummer Dylan Roche tells us. “We had brilliant fun during the six years The Chalets were together, but being on a small independent label made it tough financially. The tour we did with Kaiser Chiefs, for instance, was great but paid for by my maxed out credit card. As a result, I had to move back in with my parents which isn’t really what you want to be doing when you’re the wrong side of 30, and we all got proper 9-to-5s. We cleared our debts and thought, ‘Hang on, this getting paid every week lark is quite good.’
“We had a band meeting before Christmas and asked ourselves questions like, ‘Do we want to spend another 18 months sleeping on floors?’ and decided, ‘No, we don’t really’. My only regret in all of this is that we didn’t get to make the second album, 85% of which was written and sounded very good. It’s better though to end with our dignity intact rather than imploding two months into a tour.
“Everybody in the band has a creative streak, which will continue to be exercised in various ways. I’d like to say ‘Thanks’ to all the people who came to our gigs and bought our records. It’s a period of my life that I’ll always look back on with enormous fondness.”
