The Galway singer So claims Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd and Neil Young (“with or without Crazy Horse”) as inspiration, but the only discernible influence here is Dylan-esque folk-pop. On the EP’s lead track, ‘Just For You’, he evokes sweeping vistas but forgets to include a chorus.
Later there are forays into his family history (‘Made A Man’ is a fatherly hug set to a slow-burning jig) and peacenik maudlin (‘Crime Of War’ concludes that fighting between nations may not be an entirely positive use of free time). There’s shaggy charm here, but it’s unfortunately spoiled by a tendency to meander. Beatnik blues for coffee shop hang-dogs.
