Our Punk Icon of the Year was in top yarn-spinning form when we talked to him in LA.
The Hot Press 2017 Annual contains a suitably rollicking interview with Steve Jones, our Punk Icon of the Year who tells all about the Sex Pistols in his new memoir, Lonely Boy.
“I had a soft spot for Malcolm, but he didn’t half talk some bollocks,” he says of Mr. McLaren. “He was always trying to put a retrospective spin on it, but no fucker could have foresaw what happened with the Pistols, least of all Malcolm.”
As for Mr. Vicious, Steve notes sadly: “If only we’d called Sid Kind he’d have been out running soup kitchens, and helping old ladies across the road.”
He also talks with great honesty about the sexual abuse he suffered as a kid.
"I'm not the only one who's been a prisoner of that sort of upbringing," Steve reflects. "People might look at me in a different way now, but so be it. If talking about it helps just one other person, mission accomplished!"
Also on the agenda are his post-Pistols hook-ups with Mickey Rourke, Bob Dylan, Dave Grohl and Roy Orbison and Lemmy; Steve’s serial thieving of David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Mott The Hoople and Rolling Stones’ gear – reparations are still being made! – and his old pals, Phil Lynott and Chrissie Hynde.
