Some Glow In The Dark

Experimental freeform electronica. That’s the only way to describe this meandering work from mult-intrumentalist John Haggis, though he is also clearly influenced by the progressive rock of acts like Pink Floyd and the retro groove of French duo, Air.

Aided and abetted by a host of session musicians who, according to the liner notes, “worked from intuition rather than scripted structures,” it consists largely of extended pieces with dreamy, atmospheric textures, ambient dance rhythms and choral-like vocals.

Titles like ‘Mixes Well With Water’, ‘Caught Between Twisted Stars’ and ‘Heavy Sleeper Long Journey’ give some clue to what the listener might expect, though in truth most of the sonic twists and turns contained within this ambitious work are totally unexpected.

There’s a sincere and substantial talent and imagination at work here. But the over-riding sense is that what we have here is a film soundtrack without the film.
