Rox "Obsessed with Anything Irish"
British soul music’s saviour Rox has told Hot Press she’s “obsessed with anything Irish.” “Seriously,” she says, “I think Ireland is my favourite place in the world." My friends used to take me to the Irish Centre in London on nights out and I loved it so much. The music and the atmosphere was unreal.”
"My friends used to take me to the Irish Centre in London on nights out and I loved it so much," she continues, "The music and the atmosphere was unreal.”
As for her debut album Memoirs, she tells Hot Press, “The lyrics are almost like diary entries. There’s a lot about me experiencing heartbreak for the first time and being in a relationship where you don’t really know where you stand. … if other people can get through difficult times in their lives thanks to a song I wrote, then I find that unbelievably flattering. I get messages from time to time from people saying that songs like ‘Forever Always Wishing’ or ‘I Don’t Believe’ have helped them during hard times.”
Rox’s grandfather is a pastor in the Seventh Day Church of God, and she says “The first time I sang in public was in church. Both of my grandparents are very traditional and religious and I used to spend every Sunday studying the Bible, which I didn’t really enjoy, but I got to sing so I was happy. My family would often spontaneously sing gospel songs in the house and they still do it today.”
