Rocket Science
Re-christened Dubliners get their Fountains Of Wayne on
Formed out of the ashes of Run Kid (the name-change apparently coming about due to a clash with a US Christian rock outfit), Dublin five-piece Storyfold purvey a kind of frantic indie/power pop that is impressively timeless and effervescent. While they claim influences such as Muse, Arctic Monkeys and White Lies, there’s much more of a classic American garage band sound, mixed in with a clever, Fountains of Wayne-like gift for melodic inventiveness.
With RTÉ presenter Paddy McKenna leading from the front, and Lindsey Hogan adding harmonies and piano, their manic energy and pop smarts shine through on the opening rousing rocker, ‘Ciara Don’t Be Angry’, the recent single ‘Delphine Wakes’ (featuring ex-Republic of Loose man Deco Quinn) and the slow-burning ballad ‘Behind Closed Doors’ (not the classic Charlie Rich country hit of the same name!). An infectious tune ‘Trick Of Light’ is more classic power pop, in the style of ‘70s US outfit The Rubinoos, while ‘Another Year’ recalls Del Amitri’s anthemic ballad ‘Nothing Ever Happens’.
Storyfold may not be reinventing the pop-rock wheel, but on this evidence they could be well on their way to reaching for the stars.
