Quincy Jones: Tributes paid to music icon, who has died aged 91
"Slán Quincy Jones – influencer where influence really counts," Irish composer Bill Whelan remarked in a tribute. "Thank you for leaving us such a joyful musical legacy."
Tributes are pouring in from all corners of the music industry this morning, following news of the death of Quincy Jones, aged 91.
His family confirmed the news in a statement:
"Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him."
A colossal figure in modern music, Jones' career as a producer, composer and arranger spanned over seven decades – garnering 28 Grammy Awards, penning over 1,000 original compositions, and recording thousands of songs. Over the years, he worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Paul Simon and Aretha Franklin – to name a few. He was also known for his film scores, including 1967's In The Heat Of The Night and 1969's The Italian Job
In 2018, Netflix released an award-winning documentary about his life, which was directed by his daughter, Rashida Jones, and Alan Hicks.
Irish composer Bill Whelan is among those who have paid tribute to Jones online this morning.
