NIMIC closure leaves huge void
The Northern Ireland Music Industry Commission has been disbanded.
There’s consternation in the North following the disbandment of the Northern Ireland Music Industry Commission (NIMIC).
Set up in 2001 to promote local talent, NIMIC includes The Answer, Joe Echo, Duke Special and Snow Patrol among the artists it’s given a helping hand to.
They also received kudos for running the annual Music: It’s The Business seminar, a ‘how to’ guide for anyone wanting a career in music.
In an official statement, Invest NI says: “Due to irreconcilable issues within NIMIC's board, Invest NI and other potential partners were unable to consider any further funding. NIMIC has made a significant contribution to the development of the music industry in Northern Ireland since 2001 through the support provided by Invest NI and the Arts Council.”
Talking to the BBC, Escape Act bass-player and vocalist Richard Dale said: “Although they had limited resources they were able to offer support and advice on a one-to-one basis, they will be sadly missed. It’s not good enough for Invest NI just to say that NIMIC has disbanded – they need to show some leadership.”
In addition to Invest NI, NIMIC had received grant funding from Belfast City Council, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the British Council, the PRS Foundation for New Music and the UK’s Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure.
