Its not long since Nathaniel Rateliff was a folksy singer-songwriter, plying his trade at solo shows in small rooms. Now, he's the leader of one of the most exciting collectives on the planet - and a star of our Hot Press Annual 2016.
Along with his band, the Night Sweats, Rateliff has become a poster boy for the R&B revival, as well as one of the most magnetic performers out there; perhaps best illustrated by an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, a night to change his career.
"I hadn't done late night TV before, so I didn't know what to expect," he reflects. "I certainly didn't expect Jimmy to be so into the song, playing it all night and making such a thing of it. He was dancing at the side of the stage, really excited."
Mind, Fallon isn't the only big name who admires the work of the Missouri-born musician. At Latitude during the summer, a certain flame-haired singer-songwriter looked to borrow a guitar - and Nathaniel found Ed Sheeran to be a fully fledged disciple.
"He's a fan of my stuff," he sheepishly grins. "I'd never hung out with him before, so we had some drinks, along with some of the Snow Patrol guys. They're all super nice."
For the full interview, where Nathaniel admits he wondered whether he'd even continue with music, check out the Hot Press Annual, on sale now.
