Mozart voted Ireland’s favourite composer
A new classical music survey has confirmed Mozart as the nation’s most popular composer.
A HMV survey carried out in the UK and Ireland has revealed that Mozart is our favourite classical composer.
The survey is based on sales figures from the last 5 years in the retailers’ 240 stores across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Mozart’s popularity in Ireland is almost matched by that of Handel, who has a strong Irish connection, having written his famous ‘Messiah’ piece in Dublin. Irish composer John Field, the first to write a nocture, also sells well, along with American composers like Gershwin and Samuel Barber.
In the north, classical music sales have grown hugely in recent times, with Mozart, Beethhoven and Bach among the favourites. This, in fact, is in line with the rest of the UK, where these three composers make up over 20% of HMV's total classical sales.
According to the survey, the top 10 best-selling classical composers in the UK and Ireland are:
1. Mozart
2. Beethoven
3. Bach, JS
4. Tchaikovsky
5. Rachmaninov
6. Elgar
7. Vivaldi
8. Handel
9. Holst
10. Vaughan-Williams
