More Grip

Sidestepper is a collaboration between UK producer/musician Richard Blair and Colombian native Ivan Benavides.
Blair was originally involved in the flourishing Birmingham reggae and bhangra scene in the late 1980s. He was invited to Colombia in 1991 following a session with Colombian singer Toto La Momposina.
Intending only a short visit, Blair stayed in the capital, Bogota, for three years. During that time he worked with a wide range of Colombian artists including Benavides. More Grip is the result of their combined efforts and it arrives appositely in the midst of the current craze for all things Latin.
Mixing modern breaks and beats with traditional Latin/Salsa grooves and flourishes, it takes a direct route to the dancefloor. A third cousin of 'La Bamba', the opening track 'Andando', with its infectious big brass arrangement and tight rhythms, is typical of what follows.
'Hoy Tenemos' isn't a million miles away from the recent Latin chart-topper 'Mambo No 5' while the uptempo mood is nicely balanced by quieter tracks such as the gorgeous 'Me Muero'.
The highlight here is arguably 'Chevere Q' Chevere' featuring Colombian *rapper* Sergio Arias, whose quick-fire delivery spars with the stabbing brass and syncopated percussion, in the process making this a perfect dancefloor contender.
With this highly crafted, accessible and enjoyable outing Sidestepper could well become the Buena Vista Social Club for er, clubbers.
