Michael Hurley's record label announces the late singer's final album Broken Homes and Gardens
Hurley finished the record just days before he passed away on April 1, 2025
No Quarter has announced the release of Broken Homes and Gardens, the final album of the late singer-songwriter Michael Hurley.
His label shared the "bittersweet" news via Instagram, saying the record would arrive on September 12.
Recorded at Bellemeade Phonics and The Rope Room in Astoria, Oregon, Broken Homes and Gardens is a combination of new compositions as well as renditions of his older songs. Hurley completed his album just a few days before he passed away at age 83 on April 1 of this year.
The Pennsylvania-born singer was part of the Greenwich Village folk scene in the '60s and '70s and released his debut album, First Songs, in 1964, via the Folkways Records label. In the decades that followed, Hurley released over 30 albums.
Friends, family, and fellow musicians from all across the world expressed their sadness following his passing earlier this year.
"Michael Hurley was a countercultural folk troubadour and artist.... His wit and wild imagination, steadfast through the decades, are a beacon for singers and songwriters seeking to express the joys and fantastical idiosyncrasies of the world," read a tribute by Smithsonian Folkways, formerly Folkways Records.
Ahead of Hurley's forthcoming album, No Quarter has released 'Fava'—one of Hurley's new compositions featured on Broken Homes and Gardens.
