Mastodon announce new album Marrow Deep and share single 'Snakes for Dinner' featuring Josh Homme

American heavy metal band Mastodon have announced their new album, Marrow Deep, set for release on August 28. They have also announced the release of a new single, ‘Snakes for Dinner,’ featuring a guest vocal appearance by Queens of the Stone Age frontman, Josh Homme.

Marrow Deep comes five years after the release of Hushed and Grim, their last album. It documents the founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher “emerging from years of personal upheaval with a renewed sense of purpose and reinvigorated drive.”

They were inspired by the three Fates of Greek mythology, a trio of sisters who represent human destiny and the cycle of life. The record covers themes of loss, life and destiny.

The album marks the band’s first full-length record to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, with keyboardist João Nogueira also contributing.

‘Snakes for Dinner’ is described as “an emotionally charged epic,” which includes Josh Homme’s first appearance on a Mastodon song since his vocal contribution to ‘Colony of Birchmen’ in 2006 album Blood Mountain.

The album and song follow last week’s release of the band’s short film, The Mastodon in the Room, commemorating guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds, who died in a motorcycle crash last year.

“Bill, Brann and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us,” said bassist and vocalist, Sanders. “That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we’re united and excited to get to work.”
