Live Report: Somebody's Child entrance 3Olympia with their poignant performance
Somebody's Child displayed their emotional depth on Saturday night with a set packed full of lyrically dense, reflective tunes and a tribute to Gaza.
Fresh from their Belfast gig, indie-rock band Somebody's Child moved 3Olympia with a range of stirring tunes and impactful moments Saturday night.
The Dublin band released their sophomore album When Youth Fades Away in March, which reflects on the realities of getting older and the desire for self-transformation – a prime example with their unique, melancholic approach to songwriting.
The group is no stranger to the spotlight, with guitarist Patrick Keegan calling the Olympia their “spiritual hometown,” in an interview with Hot Press. Their confidence was evident on stage.
A Palestinian flag hung centerstage as orange flashing lights engulfed the room. Droning synth beats rang out, the crowd on the edge of their seats, before gradually blending into their first track of the night 'The Kid', as Somebody's Child took to the stage.

After a fleshed-out intro, the track kicked into gear with a jumpy, lighthearted guitar riff. The vocals contrasted with the rest of the tune, as lead singer Cian Godfrey delivered desperate, passionate lyrics, bringing a sharp, melancholy edge to the cheerful guitar strums.
Keeping with the same tone, 'Irish Goodbye' offered a booming bass beat paired with Phoebe Bridgers-style lyrics, about the parting of youth with a nostalgic and regretful outlook.
Somebody's Child slowed things down, shifting into the jazzy-pop style 'How Long?', with its soft drumbeats and airy vocals.
Without missing a beat, 'Lost' opened with fluid, dreamy keyboard notes as the lights shadowed the band in a green haze. The room swayed as fans clapped in time with the the song's soft bass notes, as Godfrey delivered delicate, longing vocals about struggling to move on.

Spotlights shinned down on the now empty stage, illuminating the Palestinian flag that had been displayed throughout.
The room fell silent as a spoken-word poem sounded throughout the venue.
Hayam Taha, a poet from Gaza, composed the piece. The band now incorporates it into each of their shows in an effort to spread awareness.
“This is the most important thing we’ve done,” said Keegan, of the poem.

Closing off the night with the final track on When Youth Fades Away, they jumped into 'Time Of My Life'.
The fast-paced tune featured reflective lyrics paired with choppy keyboard notes, as Godfrey shouted lyrics about life's fleeting beauty.
Somebody's Child's emotionally impactful performance expertly conveyed the themes of their recent record, showcasing their ability to captivate a crowd.
