Lily & Madeleine 'Fumes' -Album Review
CHARMING SECOND ALBUM FROM US SISTER ACT
Sisters Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz may be still in their teens but that hasn’t stopped the Indiana folk duo from releasing a debut album, two EPs, and this — their sophomore LP Fumes — in less than two years. Damn overachievers.
What makes things worse is that this is a very good album indeed. The fear when pressing play on a record by a wavy-haired folksy sister act is that it’s going to be twee; ukuleles galore and whispered, childlike vocals round every corner. On the contrary, Fumes kicks off with its charming title track (featuring just the right amount of xylophone), the girls’ velvety voices harmonising to perfection. It’s rockier in places (‘Cabin Fever’), but this album shines brightest when Lily and Madeleine opt for the haunting stylings of piano-led ‘Can’t Admit’, and the lazy Sunday morning feel of ‘The Wolf Is Free’. Well worth a listen.
OUT NOW.
