Lil Wayne live at The O2
Hip hop royalty types have a reputation for not taking time-keeping particularly seriously. Well, here’s a turn-up.
Lil Wayne is not just on time, he’s actually onstage early. Sadly, however, he barely plays for an hour and we’re shuffling out before 10pm.
He’s a bizarre, goofy looking dude with dreadlocks and a tattooed torso. The rapper affectionately known by his nickname Weezy also has one of the most peculiar and singular rasps in the genre.
Lil Wayne chooses to perform with an incredibly loud backing band who create an almighty, bass-bin shuddering din. While the show is frustratingly short, he packs a considerable punch and crams in plenty of hits. The O2 becomes a sea of bobbing hands and raucous appreciation. The last 20 minutes are brilliant, making the premature end all the more frustrating.
If you were to try and keep tabs on how many times he uses the b- and n-words, you’d be running out of fingers and toes to count them on. So. Lil Wayne is not rap’s hottest ticket. Neither is he one of the genre’s most egocentric offenders. On this performance, he comes somewhere in the middle...
