Laura Marling - Short Movie
Fifth album from thoughtful folkster
No-one could accuse UK folk singer Laura Marling of resting on her laurels: Short Movie is the 25-year-old’s fifth studio album to date.
Largely penned in LA, it’s as thoughtful and well-crafted a collection as we’ve come to expect from the singer. Opener ‘Warrior’ is classic Marling, unsettled but resolute: “I can’t be your horse anymore/ You’re not the warrior I would die for.” There are tender moments too: on ‘Walk Alone’ she lets a little vulnerability shine through. “I just need a little more time,” she sings, her haunting vocal rising over a sparse, hypnotic guitar riff.
At 13 tracks, it may a little long for the uninitiated, but Marling fans will be delighted that she has given so much. One for late evenings at home...
