Junior Murvin RIP
Hot Press is saddened to report the death of Junior Murvin, the Jamaican reggae legend who was closely associated with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.
His fan club included The Clash who included a cover of his ‘Police & Thieves’ on their debut album – a move that cemented the punky reggae party that Bob Marley sung about shortly afterwards.
The 64-year old died today in Port Antonio due to complications arising from his diabetes.
Those paying tribute to him include The Charlatans' Tim Burgess who says: "Sad to hear of the death of Junior Murvin; like lots of kids I was introduced to him through The Clash in 1977"; Luke Haines who proffers, “Just heard about death of Junior Murvin. Transcendental singer. One of my faves. Far more than 'Police & Thieves' but a tuff one to beat” and Analogue Wave who proffer, “R.I.P Junior Murvin. A big influence on us. His album Muggers In The Street is legendary.”
