Coldplay and Ash join The Frames onstage for impromptu jam in Atlanta, Georgia
The Frames were joined onstage last Saturday, on the Atlanta, Georgia date of their US tour, by members of Coldplay and Ash for an impromptu set.
It all started when Coldplay and Ash (who are opening for Chris Martin and co in the States), scheduled to play the 4000-capacity Masquerade Music Park in Atlanta, Georgia, had their show cancelled following lashing rain and high winds and resultant damage to their PA and backline equipment.
After no suitable alternative venue could be found, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Jon Buckland performed an acoustic set in the venue’s parking lot. Ash also played a free show at the Masquerade's indoor nightclub.
After Ash’s set, both bands raced across town to The Echo Lounge, where The Frames were headlining. A delighted Glen Hansard recognised Tim Wheeler and Chris Martin in the crowd and invited them to join him onstage.
Within minutes all four members of Ash had taken to the boards for a short set which included ‘Shining Light’ as well as a rendition of ‘Kung Fu’ with Chris Martin on vocals. Re-joined by The Frames, the newly-formed supergroup played for another 90 minutes, tearing through an acoustic version of Ash’s ‘Burn Baby Burn’ with Charlotte Hatherley on drums and Rick McMurray on guitar.
Other highlights included a lighthearted cover of The Monkees’ ‘Daydream Believer’ and a blistering version of ‘Debaser’ - now an Ash/Frames classic following their joint performance of the legendary Pixies single at this year's Hot Press Music Awards.
