Scottisch rock-band scrape the americana cliche barrel
I’m not sure what’s going on here. The only time Kassidy seem interesting to me is on their second track, in which their singer’s voice drops a register, the band pick up a C&W groove, and the producer loads on some early Johnny Cash slap-back reverb, a Marty Robbins style massed male chorus, and strings borrowed from Lee Hazelwood. But Kassidy, in giving thisd confection the rather dismissive title ‘That Old Song’, hoist a set of audio-quotation marks around it, lest we think they’re being disloyal to their real oeuvre: middle-of-the-road, vaguely expressive folk rock. On the other hand, that genre goes well with their American-accented name (now there’s a moniker that could do with a few umlauts).
