Greil Marcus pens Van Morrison book
From Mystic Eyes to Behind The Ritual, Van's whole musical career is dissected.
Legendary rock ‘n’ roll penslinger Greil Marcus focuses on one of Ireland’s most legendary talents in Listening To Van Morrison, his new book which is out here on June 17.
“Marcus has listened to Astral Weeks more than any other album by any artist, yet he is prepared to dismiss seventeen years of Morrison’s work as utterly forgettable,” reads the sleeve blurb. “In this way Marcus pursues the high points and dislocations in which Morrison reaches a unique and extreme musical threshold, and leaps the chasms as he tracks one of our most enigmatic and revelatory performers.”
The book has already hit the racks in the States, albeit under the different title of When That Rough God Goes Riding, which is a reference to the opening song on Van’s 1997 The Healing Game album.
