God Save The Queen
There are, of course, a huge number of arguments against all this – that the Pistols themselves have done more to sully their reputation than anyone, that this is merely a precursor to another marketing campaign and ill-advised comeback, that making this single of the issue is akin to waving the white flag on 2002. Yes, yes, but God Save The Queen still sounds bloody fantastic.
Neil Barnes’ dance remix works to some extent, employing the same tension that made ‘Open Up’ such a treat, but it’s the original that steals the show, a still massively potent mix of menace and melody. As always seems to be the case when I pass through this page, there’s a stack of guitar bands cueing up to relieve you of your cash. Compared to this, none of them even come close.
