Garden Tiger Moth
This Galway collective have been happily beavering away on the not-so-difficult second LP, Garden Tiger Moth, for a couple of years now while the initiated few held their breath.
The imminent release of this magical collection should mean that there are ever-more demands on their time over the next year or so, though, as its brilliant combination of surreal, dreamy melodies and pure pop sensibility will strike more than a chord with the wider world. Its mixture of infectiously hummable instrumentals and fairytale narratives is certainly deserving of pigging out in bigger pastures.
Opener 'Eager Boy Comics' is all big-eyed, innocent charm that could have the Pampers' kids bouncing away to their hearts' content at the Butlins' Toddlers Disco, while their parents tap their toes in uniform appreciation - or not, as the case may be.
Single 'The Grand Lunar' drips with honey-thick pop membranes, Michael Smalle waxing lovechildishly over a gently lilting backdrop of beats and brass.
'Scene From 6am' could be a lesson in how to write a love song, while the polished 'The Look-out Kid' pulses with equal parts realism and nostalgia.
The undoubted high point, although there are
many, is 'The Party'. A strange hybrid of cheesy listening and nu-country sensibilities, it sashays across your consciousness with maracas in hand and tumbleweed in tow.
On the evidence of Garden Tiger Moth, there are quite a few people I know who could do with taking a much longer holiday in the multi-hued, magical world of Cane141. Turn on, tune in and watch that sloppy smile slowly spread all over your face.
