Gabriel Byrne receives a Tony Best Actor nomination for Long Day's Journey Into Night

Not content with being the subject of a major interview in the current issue of Hot Press, Gabriel Byrne has just picked up a Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role In A Play Tony Award nomination for Long Day’s Journey Into Night. He’s up against Jeff Daniels (Blackbird), Frank Langella (The Father), Tim Pigott-Smith (King Charles III) and Mark Strong (Arthur Miller’s View From A Bridge).
Premiering last week with Jessica Lange as its co-star, the revival of Eugene O’Neill’s 1940s classic has seven nods in all.
“Some actors respond to Chekhov or Shakespeare, but there’s something about O’Neill that’s seems to me fathomless,” Byrne reflects, “and it doesn’t matter how deep you go. I did A Moon For The Misbegotten many years ago, and only now am I just beginning to understand how I could have done the role better.”
New York theatreland’s equivalent of the Oscars, the Tonys look like being dominated this year by hit musical Hamilton, which has a record-breaking 16 nominations.
