Bringing together the likes of Halves, Glasvegas, Placebo and much, much more...
Before Free Music Friday changes into its backwards Detroit Tigers baseball cap, baggy prison jeans and Converse – we’re so old skool! – and heads off to Slane, here’s another fine selection of tuneage ranging from the mellow southern deliciousness of former My Morning Jacket man Jim James to the gangsta spittin’ of Gucci Mane and all points inbetween.
When Glen Hansard stormed the Iveagh Gardens last month, Arbutus Yarns, AKA music documentarian Myles O’Reilly, was there shooting the whole thing.
The result is a gorgeous 25-minute film, which includes guest appearances by Lisa O’Neill, Damien Dempsey and Liam O Maonlai.
It follows on from O’Reilly’s Italian Glen tour doc and will hopefully get a TV airing at some stage. Cop an eyeful at [link]arbutusyarns.net/2013/08/10/glen-hansard-iveagh-gardens[/link]

Former My Morning Jacket man Jim James played a blinder t’other day at the Newport Folk Festival. If you don’t believe us, download the hour-long set from [link]npr.org/event/music/204525406/jim-james-live-in-concert-newport-folk-2013[/link]
NPR also have iTuneable acoustic sets from Aussie lushpop merchants Alpine and Canadian troubadour Jim Guthrie.
They’ve mightn’t have achieved commercial lift-off on this side of the Atlantic, but Stateside Toad The Wet Sprocket’s patented brand of alt. geek rock was big news during the ‘90s. The chaps are back with Something Old, Something News, which mixes new tunes with re-workings of vintage faves.
We’re also inordinately fond of the name your price The Weight Of The Globe six-tracker from angel voiced Indianapolis sisters Lily & Madeleine.

Brooklyn’s most excellent Grooms trail next month’s Infinity Caller album with the jangletastic ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ (not that one!)
Download it for free from [link]stereogum.com/1437111/grooms-i-think-were-alone-now-video-stereogum-premiere/mp3s[/link]
Gucci Mane has not one, not two but three World War 3 mixtapes containing a whopping 54 songs for your free download delectation.

As if that wasn’t enough to be getting on with, Mr Mane also joins Childish Gambino, Cyhi Da Prince, Danny Brown, Rich Homie Quan and Travi$ Scott on the new Trinidad Jame$ mix 10 PC Mild. Also on the way is his debut album proper for Def Jam.
Frankie Boyle has released a ‘two comedians having a natter’ album in conjunction with Canadian stand-up Glen Wool, which is full of underwear-soiling laughs and available free from [link]frankieboyle.com[/link]
Derry post-hardcore merchants Jetplane Landing are streaming Don’t Try, their third album, which is out now on Smalltown America and sounds the dog’s proverbials. It’s available on CD or, more excitingly, limited-edition yellow vinyl.
Babyshambles have returned with a cracking new tune, ‘Nothing Comes To Nothing’, that bodes extremely well for their Prequel To The Sequel album. It’s great having Mr Doherty back in the news for the right reasons!

We don’t have precise details yet, but check hotpress.com on Monday for details of the new Sasha Go Hard mix, which we fully expect to raise her to Azealia Banks and Angel Haze level. The Chicagoan also guests on this new tune from hotshot Boston producer J£ZUS MILLION who also has a full mix out in September. Hip hop’s big names may be shooting blanks, but the young whippersnappers have it going on in spades.
We’re loving our first listen to Jewish-Italian New York spitter Sam Siegel who does his best on American Degenerate to live up to the boast that, “I’m MCA mixed with Robert Plant.”
Glasvegas want you to have a free tune at [link]mp3.rollingstone.com/download/01LATERWHENTHETVTURNSTOSTATIC.mp3[/link]
And a jolly fine one it is too.
Not content with running his own stage at Electric Picnic – see elsewhere on hotpress.com for the inside scoop – Jerry Fish has unveiled the fabulous video for his new single, ‘Barefoot & Free’, which features a cameo from former Pogue Cait O’Riordan. U2 fans might recognise the Dublin beach they’re strolling along!
Out on September 6, the tune is the first fruits of his collaboration with R.S.A.G. who can be heard thumping the drums. If the rest of the parent album’s as good as this, they’re on to a winner!

The most excellent Halves have come up with a rather trippy vid for ‘Tanager Peak’, the Boa Howl album track that has the exquisite taste to feature Gemma Hayes who will have a big bit of news for us later in the week. Congrats to Conor O'Toole and Simon Mulholland on a production job well done.
Bret Easton Ellis seems the highly appropriate choice of narrator for the drug, death and depravity-laden promo for the new Placebo single, ‘Too Many Friends’.
The first taster from Brian Molko & Co.’s Loud Like Love album, which follows in mid-September, it looks like Less Than Zero as shot in a CSI-stylee by Jerry Bruckheimer.
And that’s where Free Music Friday must bow out for another week. Whether Slane-ing or ushering the Premier League in on the sofa, have a top weekend and keep those links coming to @stuartclark66
