Dowdall’s debut features works by Irish composers

Irish flautist William Dowdall has announced details of his debut solo album Works for Solo Flute. Its release follows his remarkable career performing with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.

On Works for Solo Flute Dowdall applies his technical brilliance to compositions from Irish contemporary composers John Buckley and Donnacha Dennehy. The Buckley contribution is ‘Winter Echoes/Sea Echoes’, a musical reflection on the magical qualities of light during an Irish winter. Dennehy’s ‘fAt’ was specially commissioned by Dowdall and the adventurous recording includes artificial electronics, with Dowdall playing alongside multi-tracked recordings of himself (some of which are of him on bass flute).

The album also showcases Dowdall playing works by Bach, Debussy and German composer Peter Michael Hamel.

The official launch of Works for Solo Flute takes place at the Royal Irish Academy of Music at 6 pm on March 5.
