Apple’s Acre
more-ish dispatch from the hardcore polyphonic spree
Once you get past the fact that Nurses are clearly hugely influenced by the baby-man that is Daniel Johnston, Apple’s Acre is a pretty good record. The vocals have that same bordering-on-the-insane element as the Texan. But the music in the background is a different story altogether. A child’s piano, odd percussion and whistling (don’t mock – at least it was cheap to record) are all part of the sonic undercurrent. Anyone craving a grittier Polyphonic Spree (yes, all three of you) will love the results. While Apple’s Acre is by no means essential, it’s an enjoyable 35 minutes which recalls all those bands from the ‘60s that the weird hippy in your street probably liked.
