Album Review: White Denim, 12
Psych-rock maestros make it look easy - 7/10
The world might be ever-changing, but one thing music fans can rely upon is Texan four-piece White Denim delivering blissful psych-rock on a semi-regular basis. The band, helmed by James Petralli, have evolved nicely over the years from scuzzy garage-rockers into pleasing psych merchants.
Engineered and produced by Petralli himself, who “touched every sound that’s on the album,” 12 is characterised by enjoyable and sometimes surprising stylistic choices. ‘I Still Exist’, for example, is one of several songs incorporating sumptuous harmonies and woodwind elements, with an end result so light, you feel like you could float away on it.
There is range to the album, too. On slower songs like ‘Hand Out Giving,’ there’s a rich country influence taking you deeper into the big-heartedness of White Denim as a band. Similarly, closer ‘Precious Child’ offers smoky, cinematic jazz.
White Denim aren’t exactly reinventing themselves, but no one could argue they aren’t excellent at what they do.
