Album Review: Turnstile, Never Enough
Hardcore heroes turn it up to 11. 8/10
Hailed as hardcore’s hottest band (despite not really being hardcore any more, but that’s a story for a different day), these Baltimore punks are set to go supernova with their fourth LP. Emboldened by finally having the money, influence and time to create the record they want to make, Never Enough sees Turnstile take a big swing and deliver a speaker-bothering affair, sprinkled with space-rock interludes, ambient detours and exhilarating riffs.
Their first LP without founding guitarist Brady Ebert, “Turnstile Summer” (as prophesied by Charli XCX) kicks off with a bang with the stunning title track. Featuring a little Culture Abuse in its DNA, the mid-paced rocker is full arena-ready of melodies. Other standouts include the skate-punk stomper ‘Sunshower’ and the nearly seven-minute long, EDM-spiced ‘Look Out For Me.’
Best of all is the brass-fuelled ‘Dreaming’ which calls to mind seminal punks Rocket From The Crypt and will be a future live favourite. An ambitious opus that isn’t afraid to blur the lines of hardcore, Never Enough might leave some old school fans behind – but it’ll earn Turnstile plenty of new ones.
