Album Review: Santigold 99 Cents
SANTIGOLD’S THIRD IS A SPARKLING COLLECTION OF SASSY POP & HIPHOP, BLEEPS & BEATS.
On her third album, the Body & Soul-bound star tackles a big theme: persona and identity. “Wehave no illusion that we don’t live in this world where everything is packaged,” she says of 99 Cents.
“People’s lives, persona, everything, is deliberate, and mediated. It can be dark and haunting and tricky, and freak us out, but it can be also be silly and fun and we can learn to play with it.”
On the aptly titled ‘Can’t Be Be Enough of Myself ’ she sings, “All I want to do is to do what I do well.” While questioning self-worth and modern culture, 99 Cents still manages to be a fun pop record, confirming the sheer breadth of Santigold’s talents. She is still very her own woman – and these terrific songs should go down a storm on an enchanted summer night at Body and Soul.
