Album Review: Back To Winnipeg, Apartment Living
Galway rockers deliver impressive debut. 8/10
Apartment Living is Galway four-piece Back To Winnipeg's debut album. On it, they offer a spot-on take on what it feels like to be a twenty-something year in 2025, smartly blending fun, tongue-in-cheek music with existential angst.
Recorded over the past couple of years, the album was developed alongside the band’s live set. The result is a carefully constructed collection of indie-flavoured alt-rock tunes.
The record opens with the charmingly bouncy duo of ‘Outrunning’ and ‘Fencing’, both driven by catchy bass lines and expertly layered guitars. ‘Jeronimo’ takes a slightly sombre turn, while the stripped-back ‘Sound Of Rain’ is pretty and dark. Elsewhere, ‘A Way Out’ is gritty and grungy; ‘Slowdown’ is deliciously melodic; and ‘Alcohol’ is a wonderfully soulful ballad.
The Americana-flavoured ‘Bodies Buried’ proves another highlight, while closer ‘Level 7’ conjures some gorgeous dreamy soundscapes, perfectly rounding out this excellent collection.
8/10
