A Lifetime To Kill
sometime hard rocker goes prog-folk on impressive solo effort
The guitarist with successful Irish hard rock outfit Glyder, Wicklow-based Kinnane recorded this solo offering over 12-months of downtime between tours. A more acoustic, at times almost pastoral affair it showcases a passion for all manner of 1970s stylings. There’s a hint of prog-folk to the epic ‘Jeremiah Jones’ whilst ‘The Yellow Moon’ recalls Horslips’ ‘Furniture’. The title-track, a country rocker in the vein of the early Eagles, boasts some nice vocal harmonies and country picking while ‘Voodoo Bones’ finds him travelling to the muddy Mississippi in search of some swampy blues.
There are some rockers here, albeit more gently paced than his characteristic Glyder fare. ‘Making A Fool Out Of Me’ is a jaunty, Lizzy-style workout showcasing some fancy fretwork, while ‘Stagestruck’ offers a nice tribute to Rory Gallagher and his legendary live shows. Irish soul stalwart Rob Strong helps out on bass and vocals, whilst Mama’s Boys legend Pat McManus adds fiddle to ‘The Intrepid Fox’. The closing track, the acoustic ballad ‘My Song‘, is an autobiographical account of the ups and downs of the artistic process and the age old songwriter’s dilemma: “Everything that I want to say sounds like every old cliché.” Worth hearing.
