"'Skull X' - that's short for 'skull exploding'"
Yes, with explanations like that it couldn't be anyone but Bobby Gillespie talking us through the song titles and tracklisting of the new and as-yet-untitled Primal Scream album
Bobby Gillespie has told hotpress.com that Primal Scream are "80, 90% certain" to be playing at this year's Witnness Festival.
"Aye, we're probably going to be playing on the Sunday night with Oasis," he tells us. "Certain members of the band – mainly the English ones – are upset 'cause we're spending most of next month rehearsing. In other words, no World Cup!"
Gillespie, who's looking fit and not-at-all sleep deprived following the birth of his son, also provided us with a track-by-track guide to their new album which is due in August.
Recorded in their own Bunker studio and as-yet-untitled, the collection lines-up like this:
'Deep Hit Of The Morning Sun': West Coast stoner pop mixed by Kevin Shields. "Aye, the psychedelic one. We just try and make a really beautiful record that means something to us, and I think we've done it here."
'Miss Lucifer': The Primals go electro for the flagship single. "I guess it's a sexual song. It's quite short, but rock & roll should be short, like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, y'know?"
'Sick City': An even more amphetamined version of the track that adorned David Holmes' Bow Down To The Exit Sign album. "Filthy urban punk rock."
'Autobahn 66': The first of two collaborations with old mucker Andy Weatherall. "I think it's the best thing we've done since 'Higher Than The Sun'. It's an absolute classic. When you hear the track, you'll be blown away. It's as good as Kraftwerk. It doesn't sound like Kraftwerk but it's got that melancholic, beautiful driving feel."
'Rise': Another demented Kevin Shields freak-out. "It's righteous, y'know? It sounds like the Plastic Ono Band. It's real glam rock meets PiL."
'Skull X': A head-on collision between the Velvets and Joy Division, expertly marshaled again by our Kev. "That's short for skull exploding. It's like a fucking guitar holocaust, incredible. Future of rock 'n' roll. I love it."
'A Scanner': Another Weatherall-assisted masterpiece. "Really beautiful electronic music. I don't sing on it. Big deal. Doesn't matter. My ego, I don't feel I've got to sing on it. That's how bands don't last."
'The Lord Is My Shotgun': Featuring the legendary talents of one Mr. R. Plant who they accosted on the street. "Robert lives near our studio and we're always having a chat. I asked him 'Would you like to blow some harp on a psychedelic blues song we've got?' and he said, 'What key's it in?'"
'Some Velvet Morning': Bobby plays Lee Hazelwood to Kate Moss' Nancy Sinatra. "We gave her a tape of the song and she fucking loved it. Her voice is really European, like a young Nico."
'Space Blues 2': Martin Duffy in Ringo Starr "I want to sing a song" shocker! "Actually he's a lovely voice – very frail and emotional."
Bobby also revealed that they've been working on a collaboration with his former Jesus & Mary Chain boss Jim Reid.
"We've got this song which just doesn't sound right with me on it, so we sent for Jim. This guy made one of the greatest rock 'n' roll records ever, Psychocandy, so it's an honour to have him on our album."
There'll be more words of wisdom from the Scream Team chief-of-staff in an upcoming issue of Hot Press. Promise!
