WATCH: Trailer released for Brendan Canty’s debut feature film Christy
The Irish film won the Grand Prix at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year
The trailer for Christy - the debut feature film from Cork director Brendan Canty - has been revealed ahead of its cinema release in Ireland on August 29.
Set on the Northside of Cork City, Christy follows the story of a 17-year-old boy who, after being expelled from his foster home, moves in with his estranged older brother.
The film stars newcomer Danny Power (The Young Offenders) alongside Diarmuid Noyes (Pure Mule). Supporting cast includes notable Irish talent such as Alison Oliver (Saltburn), Chris Walley (The Young Offenders) and Helen Behan (The Virtues).
The feature film is set make its Irish premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh next month where Noyes has been nominated for the Bingham Ray New Talent Award for his role in the film. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Grand Prix in the youth-oriented category Generation 14plus.
Christy also features members of Cork’s Kabin Studio, a youth arts collective that gained international attention in 2024 with the viral hit 'The Spark'.
The film, inspired by Canty’s earlier short of the same name, was developed with BBC Film and Screen Ireland. The screenplay was written by Alan O’Gorman.
Canty is best known his work making music videos for Irish artists. He directed Hozier's 'Take Me to Church'.
