Netflix has released the first trailer for Steve, the new drama from director Tim Mielants (Small Things Like These) starring Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy.
Introducing English actor Jay Lycurgo, who previously starred in the Netflix series The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, the film is based on Max Porter’s novel Shy.
"Set in the mid-90s, the film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve (Cillian Murphy) and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them," reads the logline.
"As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence"
The cast also includes Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo – known as rapper Little Simz, and Emily Watson.
Steve opens in select cinemas on September 19 and arrives on Netflix on October 3 2025.
