The film will follow a young Tony Soprano, as he becomes a mobster.
Warner Brothers have released the trailer for The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel to the hugely popular The Sopranos TV series, which ended in 2007.
The late James Galdolfini’s son, Michael, plays the younger version of Tony – as he develops from struggling student into the Newark, New Jersey gangster fans know from the series. Set in the 1960’s, it also features a host of characters from the series.
James Galdolfini died in 2013 of a heart attack, when Michael was 14. The elder Gandolfini played the iconic lead role of Tony Soprano between 1999 and 2007.
The Many Saints of Newark was co-written by Sopranos creator, David Chase. He has joined forces with Larence Konner –who was a writer on The Sopranos – to write the script. It will be directed by Alan Taylor, who directed nine Sopranos episodes and also directed episodes of Game Of Thrones during seasons 1, 2 and 7.
Alessandro Nivola stars as Dickie Moltisanti, Jon Bernthal plays Giovannia ‘Johnny Boy’ Soprano, and Vera Farmiga joins the cast as Tony’s mother Livia. Corey Stoll appeaers as Junior Soprano, Billy Magnussen as Paulie Gaultieri, and John Magaro is cast as Silvio Dante.
Goodfellas star Ray Liotta will also appear in the film, along with Hamilton and One Night In Miami... star Leslie Odom Jr.
The Many Saints of Newark is set at the time of the Newark race riots, when members of the African-American and Italian communities fought with police. It centres around rival gangs challenging the power of the DiMeo crime family across New Jersey, and will be released in Ireland and the UK on October 22nd.
