The Shows Must Go On : The best TV to watch this October
From schlocky horror shows to Hebrewing up a storm police dramas, Stuart Clark give isn't budging from the sofa this month.
Goosebumps (Disney+, October 13)
The R.L. Stine books of the same name are brought to life in this horror comedy, which focuses on five teenagers who unwittingly unleash supernatural forces and then have to find a way to recapture them. The cast includes vlogger, actor and trans advocate Miles McKenna who's already a very big deal in the States and Slappy, a ventriloquist's dummy with a serious Napoleonic complex. Daft but endearingly so.
Bodies (Netflix, October 19)
Four detectives, living in four different eras, find the body of the same murder victim in London’s Whitechapel. That’s the intriguing premise for this limited series adaptation of Si Spencer’s titular DC graphic novel. Its stars include Stephen Graham and Shira Haas, the Israeli actor who was all sorts of wonderful as Esther Shapiro in Unorthodox and has also bagged a role in next year’s Captain America: Brave New World movie.
Frasier (Paramount+, October 13)
Twenty years after seemingly saying goodbye for good, Dr. Frasier Crane returns for the twelfth series of one of The Best Sitcoms In The World… Ever! With no screeners available, all we can tell you is that, with Niles and Daphne gone, Frasier’s new foil is an old college friend of his played by Nicholas Lyndhurst of Only Fools And Horses renown. We’ll also get to meet the grown-up Freddy and renew acquaintances with his mum Lilith who rightly earned the actress playing her, Bebe Neuwirth, an Emmy back in the day.
Manayek (Channel4.com)
Our old pal Walter Iuzzolino comes up trumps again with this brilliant police corruption drama - the title translates as ‘Rats’ - set on the extremely mean streets of Tel Aviv. Friendship and loyalty are tested to their extremes when the soon-to-retire Detective Izzy Bachar from Internal Affairs discovers that a colleague of his may have been double-jobbing for an organised crime syndicate.
