The Shows Must Go On: The Best TV To Watch This Month
Whether travelling through the space-time continuum, unpicking a familial mystery, going in hot pursuit of an abducted minor or putting you off ever wanting to perform in Swan Lake, this month’s new TV series will have you on the edge of your sofa...
DOCTOR WHO (BBC One)
Ncuti Gatwa’s doctor returns with Anita Dobson, Bonnie Langford, Christopher Chung and Dublin actor Caoilfhionn Dunne among the guest stars. “I am so grateful to have been asked to be a part of this exciting second season of Doctor Who,” enthuses the Finglas thesp. “As a longtime fan of the show, it has been a dream come true. And to get to work with Ncuti and Varada, such a wonderful duo, this absolutely stellar cast and such a supportive and hardworking crew. I couldn’t have asked for a better gang of folk to have hurtled through the Whoniverse with.” Graham Norton also cameos in the Interstellar Song Contest episode which airs on May 17 ahead of the more conventional Eurovision.
GOOD AMERICAN FAMILY (Disney+)
After appearing in an incredible 441 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Meredith Grey, AKA Ellen Pompeo, stars in this true-ish tale of a Midwestern couple who adopt a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. Brilliantly played by Imogen Faith Reid, the eight-year-old seems like the perfect addition to the family at first but then things take a dark turn. Loosely based on a true story, the tension is almost unbearable at times with nothing remotely what it seems.
ETOILÉ (Prime Video)
From the makers of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Gilmore Girls comes this sumptuous looking drama, which revolves around two world-renowned ballet companies who swap their most talented stars. Flitting between New York City and Paris, it delves beneath the glitz ‘n’ glamour and shows just how physically and mentally punishing performance dance is. Charlotte Gainsbourg is all sorts of wonderful as one of the prima ballerinas who suffers way too much for her art.
THE STOLEN GIRL (Disney+)
Bronagh Waugh and Denise Gough fly the Irish flag in this drama about a nine-year-old girl who, along with the host family and their daughter, vanishes after a play date. As an urgent manhunt unfolds across Europe, her parents’ private lives come under forensic scrutiny with revelations galore and a denouement that’s truly shocking. And, no, you’re not the only ones who’ll never let their kids out of their sight again!
