Theatrical release date set for Danny Boyle's INK

An Irish and UK theatrical release date has been set for Danny Boyle's INK, with cinemas opening on Friday, January 8, 2027.

Based on the stage play of the same name by writer James Graham, it will receive its world premiere on the Venice International Film Festival's opening night in the Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema.

The upcoming film charts media mogul Rupert Murdoch's purchase of The Sun in 1969, a move that transformed the British newspaper landscape and helped turn the tabloid into the country's best-selling newspaper through its mix of sports, sex and right-wing politics.

Australian actor Guy Pearce stars as Murdoch, while Jack O'Connell plays The Sun's first editor, Larry Lamb.

Academy and BAFTA award-winning Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) directs INK. He previously explored the life of another influential business figure with 2015's Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender as the Apple co-founder.

"A script by James Graham I felt compelled and privileged to make," stated Boyle.

"1969 - the year we first walked on the moon - and the year Rupert Murdoch and Larry Lamb launched a newspaper that was to change the world far more.

"Long before Fox News, clickbait, and Truth Social; decades before Twitter, Facebook, Google and OnlyFans, these two men created a new tabloid which, against all odds, became the biggest selling newspaper in the world."

The festival isn't set to kick off for another three weeks, but Netflix has already jumped on acquiring the global rights to the film, having already acquired the North American and Latin American rights.
