Squid Game creator confirms season two: "I’m in the planning process"
The first season of the Korean drama series became the most streamed series on Netflix in history.
The creator of Squid Game has confirmed that there will be a second series of the dystopian drama.
Speaking to the Associated Press, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has given the green light (red light) for season two of Netflix's biggest hit.
"There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So, I almost feel like you leave us no choice!" he quips.
"But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen."
Squid Game, which focused on group of people in financial difficulties who fight to the death for a prize of €30 million. A mysterious organisation challenges 456 players from all walks of life to play a series of children's games. The catch? Lose and they get a bullet in the head.
The show became Netflix's biggest series launch ever, with the streaming giant claiming that it was watched by 111 million viewers worldwide in 17 days.
Hwang added that Gi-hun, the protagonist of the show played by Lee Jung-jae, will be roped back in for the second series.
"I promise you this, Gi-hun will return. He will do something for the world."
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Hwang revealed that working on the show was "draining" and so stressful that he lost six teeth.
"It was physically, mentally and emotionally draining. I kept having new ideas and revising the episodes as we were filming so the amount of work multiplied." he said.
Global recognition ensured for the stars of Squid Game. Model-turned-actress Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo (Jo Sang-woo) and Lee Jung-jae are recognised around the world.
“That’s amazing, right? People in America just go around and say hello,” said Lee Jung-jae. “So I really don’t know how to respond to all the love. It’s so great to be able to meet the fans who have loved and watched the show so much."
The cast and creator all have dreams of working in a Hollywood production someday.
