Shelley Duvall: Tributes paid to The Shining star, who has died aged 75
The multi-award-winning American actress is remembered for her iconic roles in The Shining, Annie Hall, 3 Women, Popeye, Nashville, McCabe & Mrs. Miller and more
In sad news this afternoon, it has been confirmed that film star Shelley Duvall has died, aged 75.
Dan Gilroy, her partner since 1989, told The Hollywood Reporter that Duvall died in her sleep at her home in Blanco, Texas, due to complications from diabetes.
Gilroy said that his "dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend" had been through "too much suffering lately", and "now she's free."
Duvall, whose accolades include a Cannes Film Festival Award and a Peabody Award, was renowned for her distinctive presence on screen, most famously in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 Stephen King adaptation, The Shining, in which she played Wendy Torrance. Over the course of her career, she appeared in multiple Robert Altman movies – including McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, Nashville, 3 Women, and Popeye – as well as Woody Allen's Annie Hall and Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits, among other notable films.
The official Stanley Kubrick social media account has paid tribute to Duvall, describing her as a "legendary character actor".
