Irish actor Adrian Dunbar receives Freedom of the City of London
"I cannot thank everyone enough for making this singular honour happen", said the Line of Duty star.
Irish actor Adrian Dunbar has been given the Freedom of the City of London in recognition for his contribution to drama.
The Co. Fermanagh actor is best known for playing Superintendent Ted Hastings in BBC's drama series Line of Duty and the lead role of Alex Ridley in detective series Ridley.
Graduating from Guildhall School's Class of 1983, the Enniskillen actor went on to gather a variety of film and television credits, including Ashes to Ashes, The Hollow Crown and Emily.
In 2024, Dunbar made his musical theatre debut staring in the London production of Kiss Me, Kate.
"Having arrived in the City of London to take up my course in Drama at Guildhall School in 1980, to then work with the RSC at the Barbican and recently, in Kiss Me, Kate, and with Guildhall Alumni, to round off this journey nearly 50 years later with the Freedom of the City of London is truly special," Dunbar said after the Freedom Ceremony.
"I cannot thank everyone enough for making this singular honour happen."
The 67-year-old was nominated for the Freedom of the City of London by the Chair of Guildhall, Emily Benn, and the former Lord Mayor, Alderman William Russell. The award follows Dunbar receiving the institution's highest accolade, Fellowship of Guildhall School in 2024.
"Aidan Dunbar is a Guildhall School great," Benn remarked. "One of the defining actors of his generation, thrilling us with unforgettable performances."
The Freedom of the City of London is granted by the City of London Corporation and is the highest honour the city can bestow, with public figures taking up the Freedom in recognition for their contribution to society. Recent recipients include choreographer and theatre director Dame Arlene Phillips, actor Cate Blanchett and novelist Ken Follett.
