RTÉ announces changes in Radio 1 weekday schedules
The announcement comes after news of Ray D'Arcy's departure from RTÉ after 11 years.
RTÉ has announced various changes in the weekday programme and presenter schedules for Radio 1.
"This new schedule introduces some new and younger voices while seeing many of our award-winning presenters move into new presenting duties," said Tara Campbell, Head of RTÉ Radio 1.
Former Newstalk presenter Kieran Cuddihy is set to take over Liveline, while Oliver Callan will move to an extended two-hour programme at 11:00 a.m..
Today with David McCullagh will begin at 9:00 a.m. and Louise Duffy will move to mid-afternoon.
Katie Hannon and Colm Ó Mongáin will take over Drivetime, now beginning at 4:00 p.m..
Morning Ireland will continue to start each weekday at 7:00 a.m., with two new presenters to be announced soon.
There will also be a new daily sports show set for 6:00 p.m..
The full timeline for the changes is yet to be fully confirmed. It is expected to take place later this year.
"This new schedule marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for RTÉ Radio 1," said RTÉ Director of Audio Patricia Monahan.
"In line with our strategy, it has been designed to meet the changing listening habits of audiences, giving them the public service content they need across the day from breaking news to analysis and comment, music, chat and entertainment coming full circle in the late afternoon and evening with compelling discussion of the issues of the day from the world of news, sport and entertainment."
Monahan confirmed Sarah McInerney and Cormac Ó hEadhra will continue to be regular fixtures on Radio 1, and that "news of their new roles" will be shared in the coming weeks.
RTÉ also said "following the sad death of our colleague Séan Rocks this summer, a separate announcement about the new presenter for Arena will be made at a later date."
Rocks, the voice of RTÉ Radio 1's Arena, died on July 31 at the age of 63.
The announcement comes after news of Ray D'Arcy's departure from RTÉ after 11 years. He formerly presented The Ray D’Arcy Show on weekdays.
According to reporting from RTÉ, D'Arcy said he was "hugely disappointed" with how management handled his departure.
