Release date announced for Jim Sheridan's Re-Creation film inspired by Sophie Toscan Du Plantier case
"It is vital to not be afraid to look at the truth, to value the living and the dead,” said the film's director Jim Sheridan.
Re-Creation, an upcoming film inspired by the unsolved murder case of Sophie Toscan Du Plantier, will be released in cinemas on Friday October 3, 2025.
Directed by Oscar-nominated Jim Sheridan and co-directed by David Merriman, the film stars Vicky Krieps, Jim Sheridan, Aidan Gillen, Colm Meaney and John Connors.
The experimental film follows twelve fictional jurors gathered to examine the real case files in the aftermath of the murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan Du Plantier, a 39-year-old who was killed outside of her holiday home near Toormore, Co. Cork on the night of December 23 1996.
"This fictional dramatisation follows what might have happened in a jury room should the entire body of evidence have been made accessible," reads the logline.
"It explores whether any justice has been served in the killing of Sophie Toscan Du Plantier, and strongly suggests that a wrongly accused man spent a lifetime vilified and maligned by authorities, media and public alike. What remains is the terrifying prospect that a vicious killer continues to enjoy their freedom 28 years on. Re-Creation, and the evidence that comes to light in it, ultimately leaves viewers to make up their own minds."
Sheridan released a Sky mini series about the case in 2021, entitled Murder at the Cottage: The Search for Justice for Sophie.
The case's prime suspect was Ian Bailey, a 57-year-old journalist from Manchester. He was arrested but never charged in Ireland over Du Plantier's murder.
In 2019, a French court convicted Bailey in absentia of the voluntary homicide of Du Plantier, sentencing him to 25 years in prison.
Bailey avoided extradition and remained in Ireland until his death in January 2024.
Re-Creation will only be showing in Omniplex cinemas across Ireland due to an exclusive agreement from October 3.
