Paul Mescal and Kerry Condon among the Irish invited to join Academy
The Academy yesterday released the full list of 398 invitees, including actors, producers, writers, directors, musicians and executives. The role of those in the Academy includes voting in the Oscars.
Oscar-nominated Irish actors Paul Mescal and Kerry Condon are among hundreds of people invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The role of those in the Academy includes voting in the Oscars.
Mescal was nominated for best actor after his incredible performance in Aftersun. After his breakthrough performance in Normal People, the Kildare man has already led a glittering acting career. He is currently filming Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2, where he is filling the lead role.
Condon was nominated for the best supporting actress award after her performance in Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin. Her acting credits include appearances in Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead, and 2017's Oscar-nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Other Irish invitees include Colm Bairéad, who directed the Oscar-nominated International Feature Film An Cáilín Ciúin. He was nominated as both a director and a writer.
Tom Berkeley and Ross White, whose short film An Irish Goodbye won the Oscar for Best Live-Action Short Film, were also invited in the Short Films and Feature Animation category. The hit Irish-language drama's cinematographer Kate McCullough joins them on the list.
Irish producer Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly, who is credited for Lady Macbeth and Ammonite, is another invitee. David Burke, Chief Marketing & Operations Officer at the US stop-motion animation studio Laika was also invited to join the Academy.

Invites were also offered to those working on documentaries and short films, and those who work in costume design, makeup and hair styling, sound design, visual effects and marketing and public relations.
Other notable invitees include best actor nominee Austin Butler, and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once actors Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, and director Daniel Kwan.
Musicians Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and Taylor Swift also received invites.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said: “The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership. They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines, and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide.”
