Jessie Buckley wins Best Actress at Golden Globes

Killarney-born Jessie Buckley has won another award for her role in Hamnet, after being named Best Actress at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles on Sunday evening.

Her win follows her recent Critics Choice Award, as well as a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award, ahead of the Oscar nominations coming out next week.

“It was such an extraordinary set to be a part of because we were telling the story of the most famous Brit who ever lived," said Buckley in her acceptance speech. "And we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, a mostly Polish crew.

“This is a real, real honour. I love what I do and I love being part of this industry.”

Directed by Chloé Zhao, Hamnet is a historical drama based on the book of the same name by Co. Derry author Maggie O'Farrell. The story centres around William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes Hathaway, following the death of their son Hamnet.

Buckley's co-star Paul Mescal was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, though the award ended up going to Stellan Skarsgård for his role in Sentimental Value.

Elsewhere, Paul Thomas Anderson's thriller One Battle After Another took home four of its nine nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and best Supporting Actress. The film's lead Leonardo DiCaprio was also nominated for Best Actor, but missed out to Timothee Chalamet, who won the award for his performance in Marty Supreme.
