Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria star Eric Dane dies aged 53
Eric Dane passed away at 53 after a battle with ALS disease.
Actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles in TV series Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria, has died aged 53.
The actor died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. After announcing his diagnosis last year, he advocated for ALS awareness until his death, earning the ALS Network's Advocate of the Year award.
Dane starred in the medical drama Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Mark Sloan from 2006 until 2012. He's made several appearances in film and TV productions, such as '90s Saved By The Bell, Gideon's Crossing, Marley & Me, and X-Men: The Last Stand.
Following his death, Sam Levinson, Ashton Kutcher, Nina Dobrev, Alyssa Milano, Kevin McKidd, Michael Grassi, and more have paid tribute to the actor.
Last December, he joined the board of directors of the medical research foundation Target ALS, helping to fund research for treatment. Around the same time, the actor also appeared in his final public appearance at a virtual panel, featuring organisation I AM ALS and telehealth company Synapticure. During the panel, he discussed his first onscreen role since the diagnosis, for which he appeared as an ALS patient on the medical drama show Brilliant Minds.
Dane admitted that the most challenging part about his Brilliant Minds role was separating himself from his character, ultimately calling it a "cathartic" experience.
His death comes 10 months after he went public with his ALS diagnosis. Dane is survived by his wife, and two daughters.
